Tax Amnesty Weekend

22 04 2008

If you haven’t heard, this weekend is the Springtime Tax Holiday for the State of Tennessee.  From 12:01 am Friday morning (April 25th), until 12:59pm Sunday night (April 27th), many of your purchases made in our state will be TAX-FREE!

At the website of the Tennessee Department of Reveue, there is a long, itemized list designating which items are taxable and which are not.  Following are some highlights as they apply to our little shop of running.

Non-taxable items:

  • running and walking shoes, socks, and inserts
  • running and jogging (is there really a difference?) apparel
  • jogging bras
  • hats, caps, mittens, and gloves
  • pants and jackets
  • backpacks and book bags
  • belts

Taxable Items:

  • Watches
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Running Strollers
  • Spiked shoes (track or cross-country spikes)

In the past, we have received many phone calls from folks wondering if we are participating in the Tax Free Weekend, and the answer is “Yes.”  Actually, every retail business in the state of Tennessee participates.  Be wary of any business who says that they are not participating.

We also receive numerous questions related to who is making the purchase or for whom the products are intended, i.e.  Do they have to be school supplies for my child?  The answer is “No.”  As long as the items being purchased are on the list and do not cost more than $100, anyone may make a tax-free purchase.
